About this book

Life in Canada is by Thomas Conant, author of Upper Canada Sketches. The preface says the pages hold some contributions towards the history of Canada and of the manners and customs of its inhabitants during the hundred years beginning October 5th, 1792. The preface says that on October 5th, 1792, the writer's ancestor, Roger Conant, a graduate of Yale University and a Massachusetts landowner, set foot on Canadian soil as a United Empire Loyalist.

The text says that in after years a man wandered to Upper Canada and hired himself to Roger Conant to work about the latter's homestead at Darlington. The writer says that about Constantinople is the only other place he can name as being at all worthy of comparison with the Lakes Ontario and Erie shore for residences. The writer says the only way to help the matter appears to him to be for railways to join and offer a general tourist ticket, taking the tourist all over the country at a reasonable rate.
