About this book

Family background, field observation and scientific argument shape G. T. Bettany's account of Charles Darwin. This biography connects Darwin's upbringing and education with his appointment as naturalist on the Beagle, then follows the research and publications that grew from the voyage. Its opening traces a family interested in medicine, botany and poetry, including his grandfather Erasmus Darwin. The chapter outline moves through South American travels, geological investigations, work on coral reefs and the development of his ideas about species.

Bettany combines personal history with explanations of Darwin's major books. Readers encounter the responses to his work, his exchanges with other scientists and studies ranging from orchids and climbing plants to earthworms. The account also considers his habits, friendships and methods of observation. It offers a way to follow how many separate investigations became part of one scientific career, while showing how an early biographer interpreted Darwin's influence.
