About this book

Life of John Sterling is by Thomas Carlyle. The contents list chapters headed Birth and Parentage, Schools: Llanblethian; Paris; London, and Universities: Glasgow; Cambridge. The text describes a Pension of two hundred pounds that only expired with the life of Edward, John's Father, in 1847. The text says Edward had picked up, at Waterford, a thoroughly Irish form of character.

One passage says Maurice became Sterling's brother-in-law and wedded Mrs. Sterling's younger sister. One of Sterling's commonest expeditions, in this time, was a sally to the other side of London Bridge. In one conversation the writer says they spoke of Cromwell, among other things now forgotten, and that Sterling was trenchant, positive, and in some essential points wrong on that subject.
