About this book
J. Milton Mackie presents Schamyl against the mountain landscape and political struggles of the Caucasus. Published in 1856, this account connects his life with resistance to Russian rule and the leaders who preceded him. Its opening moves from snowy peaks and wooded valleys to older traditions and the history of the region.
The military narrative shows how religious authority and armed leadership overlap. At Himri, Khasi-Mollah's remaining followers resist a Russian assault, while Schamyl survives severe wounds. The account then turns to Hamsad Bey, whose use of Russian deserters and efforts to strengthen his position reveal divisions within the resistance.
Mackie writes with open admiration for the mountain communities and their independence. His broad descriptions of land, customs, and belief accompany the battles, giving the biography the scope of a regional history as well as a portrait of a leader.
