About this book
Falk, a reminiscence by Joseph Conrad, presents a group more or less connected with the sea dining at a small river-hostelry near London. The narrator describes the Diana of Bremen, whose name appears in white letters across the stern beneath windows resembling those of a cottage. The narrator receives on his hat a rag-doll belonging to Hermann’s eldest daughter before becoming acquainted enough with Hermann to speak to him.
The narrator proposes paying eighteen dollars for local knowledge to help get his ship down to the sea without steam. Falk secures his cabin door after noticing that a port commands the approaches to the freshwater pump, where he reasons his opponent must come to drink.
