About this book

A detective surrounded by disguises and cryptograms receives news of a missing prince, then struggles with clues that ought to be plain. Stephen Leacock uses this inflated sense of importance to turn familiar story conventions into jokes. His 1911 collection ranges across detective fiction, chivalric romance, sentimental memoirs, a sea story and an imagined future. The chapter titles announce the literary poses that each short piece takes apart.

In another excerpt, a woman records her devotion to Otto in increasingly dramatic diary entries. She interprets his requests for money and valuables as signs of concern for their future together. The gap between her account and the practical details gives the passage its comic force.
