About this book

Rain on a cottage roof becomes a source of delight for Alice, a poor child who finds companionship in grass, flowers and the faith she has learned at Sunday school. When Maddie arrives wet and cold, Alice dries her clothes by the fire and shares her cheerful view of their surroundings. Beside the brook, she imagines the sky, turf and reflected light as the furnishings of a grand palace.

Little Alice's Palace brings Christian teaching into a children's story about poverty, friendship and happiness. Alice's simple meal and affection for living things offer a contrast to the comfort of an expensive house. Later, Maddie's younger sister Lolly recalls Alice's words outside her own shabby home and begins to pray. Readers interested in religious stories for children will find a clear example of how gratitude, imagination and belief shape the children's responses to hardship.
