About this book

Nearly seven years old, Frankie Gray is eager to join the small school opened by Fanny Grant. His cousin Nelly shares his curiosity about its bright maps, animal pictures, blackboard and model planets. Flowers brought by the children help make the room welcoming, while their walks with Miss Grant show the affection growing between pupils and teacher.

Madeline Leslie sets these everyday scenes beside a harder lesson in kindness. When Nelly treats a poor schoolmate cruelly, Mrs. Gray challenges the pride behind her behavior and asks her to consider how she would feel in the other girl's place. Prayer and Christian teaching shape both family life and school routines. This children's story offers a view of early classroom learning alongside direct moral instruction about sympathy, social differences and the responsibility to treat others well.
