About this book
On a cold October evening in Germany's Black Forest, a woodcutter returns home carrying a sleeping girl, a violin and a small bag. Wilhelm Hörstel has found little Frida Heinz beneath a fir tree, frightened and waiting for her father. His account of the encounter draws the reader into a children's story about kindness, family ties and the shelter offered by strangers.
Christian faith runs through the tale, with Frida's small brown Bible connecting personal comfort with care for others. A later scene finds her in Cannes with Adeline, looking across the Mediterranean and speaking warmly of the friends she left in the forest. Frida remembers teaching Elsie and Hans to read the Bible and sharing it aloud with the woodcutters. For readers interested in religious children's fiction, the book brings together domestic scenes, changing landscapes and a young girl's questions about her family.
