About this book

An April walk in Kensington Gardens turns unsettling when Mr. Rayburn and his young daughter Lucy encounter a distressed widow. Her strange gestures prompt Rayburn to follow her and ask at her lodgings about her welfare. The opening story, "Mrs. Zant and the Ghost," frames this daylight encounter as a case of contact with a spirit, leaving belief and doubt in tension.

Published in 1887, Wilkie Collins's collection brings together short fiction about nineteenth-century English social life. In another story, Lepel's recovery from bronchitis gives way to unexplained weakness. His friend Rothsay jokes about the housekeeper's interest in a new servant, drawing money and marriage into an apparently ordinary household conversation. These scenes show Collins moving between supernatural uncertainty, domestic humor and the anxiety of depending on other people. The collection offers readers varied situations in which familiar places and everyday relationships become difficult to interpret.

About the author

Wilkie Collins

Collins wrote The Woman in White for Dickens's magazine and then The Moonstone, which is usually called the first English detective novel and gave the form Sergeant Cuff, the country-house theft and the unreliable multiple narration.
