About this book

Leah's diary begins with a medical restriction that puts her family's income at risk. Her husband William Kerby, a traveling portrait painter, must rest his eyes for at least six months. She records the strain of paying debts, leaving comfortable lodgings and supporting their children while his work is interrupted. In Wilkie Collins's 1856 collection, these household concerns provide the frame for six tales, each introduced through its own prologue.

The storytellers range from a lawyer and a French governess to an angler, a nun and a professor. The passage from The Lady of Glenwith Grange introduces the Welwyn family, including Ida's education under her mother's care and the arrival of her younger sister Rosamond. Books, music, wealth and social ambition all enter this family history. Readers can explore how Collins links separate mystery stories with the practical worries of an artist's home and the personal histories of people encountered in his travels.

About the author

Wilkie Collins

Collins wrote The Woman in White for Dickens's magazine and then The Moonstone, which is usually called the first English detective novel and gave the form Sergeant Cuff, the country-house theft and the unreliable multiple narration.
