About this book
This is the report of a formal investigation into the circumstances of the loss of the British steamship Titanic, of Liverpool, which foundered on April 15, 1912, after striking ice in the North Atlantic. The inquiry was conducted by the British government, and the text is printed as a United States Senate document, presented on August 20, 1912.
The table of contents lists a description of the ship, with sections on water-tight compartments, decks and accommodation, structure, life-saving appliances, pumping arrangements, electrical installation and machinery, and on crew and passengers. Numbered questions put to the court ask how many people were taken away in each boat, how many were rescued, and which vessels could have given help before the Carpathia arrived. A table of boat loadings and a timed record of wireless signals heard by the Virginian and the Olympic also appear.
