About this book

A comfortable Sunday aboard the Titanic becomes the starting point for Archibald Gracie's account of its loss in the North Atlantic. He remembers books from the ship's library, a heated swimming pool and conversations with fellow passengers before turning to reports of ice and the collision. Published in 1913, this survivor's narrative follows the disaster through the loading of lifeboats, the ship's foundering and the struggle to stay alive in the water.

Gracie combines his own observations with testimony from other passengers and crew. Chapters distinguish the lifeboat operations on the port and starboard sides, while the collected statements describe rescue efforts among floating wreckage and the transfer of survivors between boats. The result offers readers a historical account built from individual memories and inquiry evidence, with attention to the practical decisions and human responses that shaped those hours at sea.
