About this book
An umbrella's carved ivory face takes hold of a dinner guest's imagination in this short comic tale by Douglass Sherley. After an evening of rich decoration, refreshments and unsettling stories at a friend's house, the narrator carries the umbrella out into a storm. Back at the Pendennis club, he settles beside the fire and imagines the little face telling its own story.
That story turns to a rainy street encounter. A man receives a painful jab from the umbrella, and the woman carrying it offers to care for his injury. His response soon becomes an extravagant declaration of love. Elaborate furnishings, repeated phrases and mock solemn descriptions give ordinary objects and awkward courtship an absurd importance. Readers interested in playful short fiction can enjoy the tension between the narrator's grand language and the small accident at the heart of the tale.
