About this book
The Temptation of Samuel Burge appears under the heading Captains All, Book 8, with the name W.W. Jacobs. Mr. Higgs, a jeweller, sits in the small parlour behind his shop, gazing hungrily at a supper-table laid some time before. The housekeeper says, of the expected guest, that he must be coming by the last train after all.
The jeweller says Brother Clark wrote that he only lives for the work, and that the chapel at Clerkenwell is crowded to hear him. The housekeeper admits at the side-door the gentleman whose preaching had done so much for the small but select sect known as the Seventh Day Primitive Apostles. Mr. Burge quotes Brother Clark as saying What is a jeweller's shop compared with a 'uman soul, a priceless 'uman soul? The jeweller tells the frantic Mr. Burge to think of the sermon and the congregation, and Brother Burge replies in language he had not used in public since he joined the Apostles.
