About this book
Fourteen-year-old Willie watches the office typist at work and turns the sound of her keys into music in his imagination. Samuel E. Kiser gives this young employee a sequence of comic sonnets, spoken in colloquial language with the grammar and spelling of his eager narrator. Frankie, the typist, is twenty-five or twenty-six, and Willie's admiration fills ordinary office routines with elaborate hopes, jealous complaints and imagined acts of bravery.
A scolding boss, a rival clerk, lunch scraps and a crowded elevator provide material for the poems. Willie dreams of rescuing Frankie from danger and wishes he could become a grown man and direct the work himself. His mother's objections expose the distance between his private certainty and other people's view of the situation. Readers interested in humorous verse can follow how the sonnet form contains this persistent, highly personal account of an adolescent crush.
