About this book

A small-town daily newspaper office is the vantage point for this collection of nineteen linked sketches by William Allen White (1868-1944). The narrator speaks for the whole staff, who see everything and print only part of it: the Baptist choir that cannot be rid of its bass singer, the widower whose courting is the subject of office bets, the bank cashier whose twenty faithful years end in a shortage that his wife makes good by selling the family home.

Chapter titles such as "The Society Editor", "The Coming of the Leisure Class" and "Our Loathed but Esteemed Contemporary" show the range. Some pieces are comic, poking mild fun at the town's pretenders. Others turn tender, as in the story of an old Sunday-school teacher and a boyhood friend who went wrong and came home ill.

First collected in 1906 and set among the editors, preachers, club women and bankers of a Kansas-style country town, the book gives a warm and funny view of ordinary American life.
