About this book

Fourteen-year-old Lucia tends goats near Cellino, an Italian hill town whose stone walls look out towards the Alps. She lives with her grandmother Nana and her little brother Beppino, teasing him into watching the herd while she goes to visit Maria. Her favourite goat, Garibaldi, is part of the household comedy. Yet the guns in the mountains and the soldiers passing through the town bring the First World War close to these ordinary routines.

Martha Trent combines this family life with a wartime adventure for young readers. In a later scene, Lucia searches the valley for an injured Italian soldier and helps him into a shell hole as firing continues around them. Their anxious wait gives her determination a practical test: finding help for someone who cannot move. The story offers a child’s view of life near the fighting, with lively conversation, fear and concern for others sharing the page.
