About this book

Ted and Jan Martin are the two Curlytops, named for their tightly curling hair, and in this 1918 story they spend a holiday at Cherry Farm with their mother, baby brother William, nicknamed Trouble, and Grandpa Martin. Their pet goat Nicknack pulls the wagon, and the two siblings quarrel and make up before the first chapter ends.

Grandpa has promised them a camping trip to Star Island, and the chapter titles promise a blue light, a bear, a cave, a swing and a hunt for gold. Along the way the children build a crooked raft in the manner of Robinson Crusoe, and more than once their enthusiasm runs ahead of good sense.

Howard R. Garis, who also wrote the Uncle Wiggily stories, keeps the chapters short and the dialogue lively. It suits young readers, or anyone reading aloud to them.
