About this book

Snowy sleigh tracks and dandelions in the gutters make a remembered street feel almost like a neighbour in Joyce Kilmer's verse. This 1917 collection finds subjects in ordinary surroundings: roofs, gardens, houses and a snowman shaped by children's hands. The title poem gives Main Street the power to recognise its friends, while the traffic of a city street becomes a burden. Poems about home connect affection and belonging with concrete details of shelter and family life.

Religious devotion also takes familiar objects as its starting point. Roses become sacred images, a blue garment prompts a prayer, and the Annunciation and Visitation receive the concentrated form of sonnets. Mary and the saints appear in poems that combine direct address with reflections on faith. Readers interested in devotional poetry can see how Kilmer carries the language of love and domestic comfort into worship, moving between rhymed stanzas and more conversational lines.
