About this book
A mountain's stone profile and an empty chair suggest two different scales of feeling in Mary Baker Eddy's Poems. The opening piece considers the Old Man of the Mountain in New Hampshire, placing human ambition beside the silent rock. In "Constancy," the speaker misses a loved one throughout the changing hours of the day. "Mother's Evening Prayer" turns a child's safety into a petition for divine care, while other verses connect affection with patience and kindness.
Published in 1910, the collection brings together poems from different periods of Eddy's life, including hymns and writing for public occasions. The dedication of a temperance hall gives religious verse a community setting. In "Wish and Item," concern for others includes helping a child with sore feet, bringing spiritual ideas into ordinary acts of care. These shifts between landscape, family memory and public duty give readers several ways to approach the collection's recurring themes of faith, loss and love.
