About this book

Fortified woods, narrow gaps and an exhausted French state shape Hilaire Belloc's account of the battle of Malplaquet in September 1709. He begins with Louis XIV's support for his grandson's claim to the Spanish throne and the coalition that formed against France. Marlborough and Prince Eugene lead the allied armies, while Villars prepares a defensive line. Belloc treats these military choices as part of a larger political struggle, linking the campaign to failed peace negotiations and the pressures facing the French kingdom.

The account moves from the siege of Tournai through manoeuvres for position to the battlefield itself. Sketch maps accompany explanations of entrenchments, woods and routes of advance. In the battle chapter, morning mist delays the opening fire, and a small wood divides an attacking force from support. Readers interested in military history can follow Belloc's close attention to how terrain, timing and command decisions affect an action.
