About this book
The account describes a fiscal system out of touch with the realities of its time, and identifies a violent and rapid remodelling of that system as the remedy. The discussion of reform says that custom and the collective force of private avarice checked attempts to act, with separate interests refusing the proposed change. Turgot is described as especially suited to the attempt, with an austere, convinced and isolated mind, although even he refused to level the social obstacles within a few months.
Marie Antoinette's first weeks as queen are described as free from conspicuous extravagance or folly, apart from her girlish irruptions into the Council, which the account calls an ill omen. The carriage scene describes horses floundering amid cries and struggling people before the great vehicle is hauled inside and the wrought-iron gates clang behind it.
