About this book
George Manville Fenn's Marcus: the Young Centurion opens with a chapter called Flies and Boys, in which Marcus, a Roman lad of about eighteen, falls asleep at a table on a hot day, a wax tablet and a stylus slipping from his hands.
In another passage the old soldier Serge offers to show Marcus how to fight six boys who knocked him about, while Lupe stands ready, and Marcus says his father may prefer study to being a great Roman general and senator. A later passage has the old soldier advising him to use his spear rather than throw javelins and to skirmish and drive the enemy with the cavalry. A third has Cracis, speaking faintly, and Caius Julius talking about whether the old servant and Cracis's son can pass the Gauls to reach the pass where the great captain waits for help.
