About this book

Family history and literary criticism meet in Helen Zimmern's account of the Irish novelist Maria Edgeworth. Published in 1884, the biography draws on private letters and an unpublished memoir written by Edgeworth's stepmother. Its opening places the writer within a family long established at Edgeworthstown in County Longford, then turns to her father, Richard Lovell Edgeworth. His interest in inventions, practical improvement and educational theories provides context for a life Zimmern describes as closely connected with his.

The contents follow Edgeworth from childhood to later years, with chapters on children's books, Irish tales, fashionable society and travels. Zimmern also weighs the strengths and limits of her fiction, especially its concern with common sense, moral instruction and ordinary human behavior. Readers interested in literary biography can find both a family portrait and a nineteenth-century assessment of how everyday choices became material for stories.
