About this book

A May Day celebration gives Marjorie Maynard and her friends an excuse to turn the family lawn into a royal court. Their Jinks Club chooses two queens, invents a king, and assembles costumes from paper flowers and ordinary cloth. Marjorie directs the procession while her mother and Miss Hart join the festivities. Carolyn Wells opens this children's novel with improvised speeches, friendly compromises, and the cheerful confusion of a party planned that morning.

The family's travels bring a different test of Marjorie's enthusiasm. On the way through New Jersey to visit her grandparents in New York City, she meets Ethel Sinclair, a girl who stitches visitors' names onto a linen cloth. Marjorie wants to try the same project and collect names during the trip. Readers interested in family adventures will find playful siblings, new acquaintances, and the small negotiations between energetic children and adults who expect good manners.
