About this book

A chance meeting in New York's City Hall Park brings telegraph messenger Mark Mason face to face with his wealthy uncle, Solon Talbot, and cousin Edgar. Mark and his mother have received only seventy-five dollars from his grandfather's estate, which Talbot administered. Their concern about the money gives Horatio Alger's story a family dispute alongside its picture of working boys, prosperous visitors and sharp exchanges on the city streets.

Mark's alertness also matters beyond his own household. In a railway scene, he challenges a man posing as a minister over a young woman's missing purse and presses him to return it. Dialogue carries the encounter, showing how a boy can stand his ground against an adult's threats and social pretensions. Written for young readers, the novel links diligence and success with questions of honesty, fairness and wealth. Its street humor and direct confrontations offer a view of how character is tested through everyday dealings.
