About this book
Arriving in New York with little money, Herbert Randolph needs work at once. The Vermont boy buys newspapers for their job advertisements and meets Bob Hunter, a streetwise newsboy who offers advice on meals, rooms and earning a living. Their conversation sets country manners beside city slang, making friendship as practical a resource as cash in Frank Andrew Munsey's novel for young readers.
The story also tests what ambition is worth when money comes from dishonest dealings. In a confrontation with Gunwagner, a receiver of stolen goods, Herbert and Bob face the promise of wealth in return for joining his business. Herbert's refusal gives the book's lessons in honesty a concrete setting. Readers interested in older children's fiction will find brisk dialogue, urban uncertainty and a direct argument about work, loyalty and the limits of financial success.
