About this book
Martin Van Buren is a book by Edward Morse Shepard. The preface to the revised edition says that since 1888, when this Life was originally published, the history of American politics has been greatly enriched. The preface says the labors of Mr. Fiske, Mr. Adams, Mr. Rhodes, and others have gone far to render unnecessary a caveat entered against the unfairness, or at least the narrowness, of the temper with which Van Buren had been treated.
A man named Williams is quoted as telling his rival, "I get all the verdicts, and you get all the judgments." Benjamin F. Butler is described as a famous pupil of Van Buren both in law and in politics. The text says the District of Columbia was one bit of territory in which Congress doubtless had the power to abolish slavery, and that the District lay between and was completely surrounded by two slave States.
