About this book
Inquiry Into the Origin and Course of Political Parties in the United States is by the late ex-president Martin Van Buren, edited by his sons. The introduction says that the pages originally formed part of a much larger work, from the general course and design of which they constituted a digression. The text says the colonists were placed upon a footing widely different from that they had theretofore occupied, and that commercial rivalry and political jealousies soon generated questions of the gravest import as to the extent of the power of Parliament to legislate for them.
A passage about one man says his papers will be examined in vain for imputations of faults to his contemporaries, and that he carried this self-denial farther than any other public man. The text says that a Funding System soon became a dead letter, no further thought of than to get rid of the debts that had been contracted under it.
