About this book
Rosemary is twenty-five and has spent her whole life in a narrow valley where the Marsh family have tended the same vineyard for a century. She is plain, worn by hard work and fond of books, and she escapes to a hilltop of nine birches. When she ties a scarlet ribbon to a bough, the village schoolmaster climbs up to meet her once the children are dismissed. He is restless, tired of grudging pupils and of a family vineyard he never chose.
Myrtle Reed (1874-1911) wrote the novel as a story of love, duty and unspent hopes, and its dedication is "To All Who Have Loved in Vain". Chapter titles such as "The Crystal Ball", "The House of the Broken Heart" and "Betrothal" hint at its course without giving it away. Later scenes move indoors to candlelit parlors and moonlit porches, where a man watches a woman play the piano while his mother dozes nearby.
It is an American romance of 1910, gentle in manner and rich in description.
