About this book
Master Skylark, A Story of Shakspere's Time, is by John Bennett. The contents list chapters called Off for Coventry, In the Warwick Road, A Dash for Freedom and The Making of a Player. A caption pictures Queen Elizabeth saying, Master Skylark, thou shalt have thy wish.
Carew interposes when the players want Nick to sing, saying that he hath just eaten his fill, so he cannot sing, and that he shall not sing until to-morrow in the play. At the Blue Boar Inn there is not a bed to spare, nor had the players kept a place for Carew, and lodgings are taken at the Three Tuns in the next street for himself and Nick. The Dutchmen stand up in their boat and bow like jointed ninepins, the lords stand up in their boats and bow very low in return, and the Dutchmen shout back Goot Yule.
