About this book
Memoir of the Life of Thomas Young, M.D. F.R.S., is dated London, 1831, and comes with a catalogue of his works and essays. The memoir begins by saying it was drawn up from short memoranda of his own writing, by one who had long and intimate acquaintance with him.
In one passage the young Thomas Young is made to learn English and Latin poems by heart before he understood them, and goes to the school of a Mr. Thompson at Compton in Dorsetshire in 1782. Another passage says that the article Tides, in the Supplement to the Encyclopædia Britannica, was among his most fortunate results, and that some philosophers still think his theory of the tides rests too exclusively on analogies. The catalogue lists items such as remarks on Laplace's computation of the density and figure of the Earth and an appendix to the second edition of Belzoni's Travels, 1821.
