About this book

Fleeming Jenkin was an engineer and professor at Edinburgh, and Robert Louis Stevenson wrote this memoir of him after his death. Stevenson argues in the preface that Jenkin mattered less for his published papers than for his character, his friendships and his brave attitude to life.

The first chapter goes back through the Jenkin family of Kent, the manor of Stowting Court, Fleeming's father and his mother's family, before reaching the man himself. This is the 1901 New York edition from Charles Scribner's Sons, which prints the memoir alone, without the papers it first introduced.
