About this book
Memoirs of Carwin the Biloquist, marked as a fragment, is by Charles Brockden Brown and carries the dates 1803-1805. Chapter I begins with a speaker who says he was the second son of a farmer, whose place of residence was a western district of Pennsylvania. The speaker says that his eldest brother's wishes never led him astray from the hay-stack and the furrow.
A speaker tells of entering a gloomy recess with the sun nearly set, and says that goblins and spectres were to him the objects of the most violent apprehensions. The text says that the order of Jesuits had furnished an example of all the errors and excellencies of such a scheme. A speaker argues that, resting on the two props of fidelity and zeal, an association might exist for ages in the heart of Europe, whose influence might be felt, and might be boundless, in some region of the southern hemisphere. A speaker addressing a listener as you says he would most joyfully embrace a thousand deaths rather than that the listener should prove a recreant.
