About this book
A Roman Singer is a book by F. Marion Crawford. Cornelio Grandi, who tells the story, says, "I was not always poor, nor always a professor of philosophy, nor a scribbler of pedantic articles for a living." A first-person voice wonders what life would be without Mariuccia and asks whether anybody would darn the speaker's stockings or save the peel of the mandarins to make cordial.
A first-person voice says that the sirocco was blowing up and down the streets, and that the speaker had been persuaded to go with Nino to the house of Sor Ercole to hear "my boy sing the opera he had last studied". A card reads "Baron Ahasuerus Benoni" and gives no address, and a man says to Signor Grandi, "I trust you will pardon my intrusion." At a door, a first-person voice calls through the keyhole to Mariuccia to come quickly.
