About this book
A new source of joy to Mr Melmoth's affectionate heart was an increasing family, and he accounted a walk or a ride in the country, with his wife and little ones, his highest relaxation. The text says Mr Melmoth's successful voyages, at rather earlier than forty years of age, enabled him to leave the sea, and to carry on an extensive mercantile employment in the metropolis. The narrator says that in all respects the narrator was considered as the adopted child of the family.
The narrator says that all that a friend had said respecting such an engagement had been so vague that the narrator began to doubt of the reality of its existence. The narrator says Mr Montague shot suddenly by and rushed up stairs towards his apartment, and that his haggard countenance and furious gestures filled the narrator with dismay.
