About this book
The Divine Lady is subtitled A Romance of Nelson and Emma Hamilton and is credited to L. Adams Beck. The preface says the thought of this romance came to its writer years ago in the Admiral’s cabin of Nelson’s flag-ship, the Foudroyant, because the ship was the sea-shrine of that great but errant passion.
The text has Sir Harry, now warm and generous with wine, give the gentlemen a running account of the tussle and demand of Greville to bear witness whether Mrs. Hart hadn’t rode like a damned jockey. The Duchess says, smiling in her turn, that there is always the father. The text has two people face each other, with the ruins of their life between them.
