About this book
The title page calls the work historic court memoirs of the great events during the minority of Louis XIV. and the administration of Cardinal Mazarin, written by himself. The original preface says the author, John Francis Paul de Gondi, Cardinal de Retz, was born at Montmirail, in Brie, in October, 1614. The writer says he pursued his point and gained the first place by eighty-four voices.
The writer says that towards the end of September he arrived at Rome, where the Marechal d’Estrees, who resided there as ambassador, gave him such instructions for his behaviour as he followed to a tittle. The writer lists the Prince de Conti, M. de Beaufort, M. d’Elbeuf, Marechal de La Mothe, M. de Brissac and President Bellievre as meeting with him that night at M. de Bouillon’s house. The writer says he kept seven open tables and spent 800 crowns a day on a journey whose expense was immense for so short a time.
