About this book
Memoirs of Madame la Marquise de Montespan presents itself as historic memoirs of the court of Louis XIV, written by the subject herself. The translator's preface says historians have generally treated Madame de Montespan somewhat harshly, perhaps drawing their impressions from the often narrow and malicious judgments of contemporaries. The narrator names Cardinal Mazarin's palaces and Cardinal Richelieu's castles as fine examples for M. Fouquet.
The narrator expresses sympathy for Mademoiselle d’Amurande's trouble and assures her of goodwill and protection, while asking her to approve action taken independently of the King. Mademoiselle d’Amurande leaves her fate in the narrator's hands, and the narrator directs her to write a note to the narrator's sister. The narrator observes additions to the magnificence of the chateau of Versailles, specifying new curtains, candelabra and carpets.
