About this book
Magic is a book by Ellis Stanyon that gives clear and concise explanations of all the well-known illusions, as well as many new ones. The contents list names chapters on the principles of sleight of hand applicable to small objects, tricks with coins and tricks with handkerchiefs, among others. The preface says the art of pretended magic dates back to the remotest antiquity and has been known under various names, such as White Magic, Conjuring, Natural Magic, and Prestidigitation.
The text describes the servante as a secret shelf behind the performer's table, on which are placed articles to be magically produced in various ways. The text says a hat trick can be carried on to an almost indefinite period, but should not in any case exceed fifteen minutes. The text says that during the French Revolution it was a dangerous thing to possess a likeness of the martyred King Louis XVI.
