About this book
Memoirs of the Court of Louis XIV. and of the Regency identifies its account as the secret memoirs of the mother of the Regent. The narrator attributes some of her ill treatment since marriage to the Princess Palatine, who prepared the marriage contract governing the inheritance. The narrator says pensions paid by the King to people bearing the title of Madame have become insufficient after remaining unchanged for many years.
The narrator recalls feeling as though she had fallen from the clouds on arriving at Saint-Germain. The narrator resolves to treat Monsieur attentively so that he might grow accustomed to her and eventually be able to endure her. The King receives the narrator in the Guards’ hall and leads her to the Queen with whispered reassurance about their mutual fear.
