About this book
Mesopotamian Archaeology is subtitled An Introduction to the Archaeology of Babylonia and Assyria. Percy S. P. Handcock, M.A., lists numerous illustrations and maps on the title page, and the book is dated London, 1912. His preface begins with the observation that in every department of science the theories of yesterday are perpetually displaced by the empirical facts of to-day.
One passage describes the soil of the Babylonian delta and quotes Herodotus on the country's yield of grain and on palm trees whose fruit supplies bread, wine and honey. Another turns to a tablet recording the restoration of the temple of Shamash by two kings, Simmash-shipak and Eulmash-shakin-shum, and discusses it as a work of art and an historical monument. Another covers beliefs about the nether-world, burial, and the food and drink that the dead were thought to need.
