About this book
Mission Furniture: How to Make It, Part I, is a handbook by H. H. Windsor, copyrighted in 1909. The list of illustrations names a plant stand, a medicine stand in quarter-sawed oak and a hall chair in plain oak.
One passage says a mission chair for the dining room can be made from any of the furniture woods. The front and back legs are cut from 1-3/4 in. square stock, the slats are 7/8 in. material, and the three upright slats in the back are 3/4 in. All joints are mortised into the posts, though dowels can be used if they are clamped tight while the glue sets. The seat is one piece of 7/8 in. material upholstered in leather without springs, or a square frame with a cane bottom. Other passages describe back panels filled with boards of set widths and pressed together in cabinet clamps, and a plant stand whose top is held by 2 in. No. 10 screws.
