About this book
Applause at the King's House introduces Nell Gwyn, a former orange seller whose wit has made her a favourite of the London stage. George Cochrane Hazelton sets this historical novel in the Restoration court of Charles II, where theatrical spectacle, royal attention and competing ambitions meet. The opening places Nell before a noisy audience on the first night of a Dryden play, wearing an enormous hat and delivering a comic prologue.
Hazelton adapted the story from his own earlier play, and the lively exchanges retain the feel of performance. Nell's banter with Charles moves between teasing confidence and anxiety about the strength of his affection. A rival's plans for a ball become another occasion for verbal sparring. Readers interested in theatre history and courtly romance will find a fictional portrait built around public charm, private feeling and the uncertain rewards of royal favour.
