About this book
The story starts at the court of Henry the Second of France, where the King's long passion for Diana of Poitiers, Duchess of Valentinois, is well known. The King enjoys hunting, tennis and running at the ring, and the Queen is present at the entertainments. Madame de Chartres, a widow who left the court and lived in the country, brings up her daughter, an heiress, to value virtue, and speaks to her of love's dangers as well as its charms. The book is divided into four parts.
In one passage a queen tells of her grievances against the Duchess of Valentinois, the Constable Montmorency and the Mareschal de St. Andre, and confides in her listener. In another, Monsieur de Nemours begins to explain how he came to overhear a conversation between a woman and Monsieur de Cleves, and she tells him she has long forgiven him.
