About this book

Modern Spiritualism, by Uriah Smith, treats spiritualism as a subject of prophecy and a sign of the times. The contents list includes chapters headed The Dead Unconscious, They Are Evil Angels and What The Spirits Teach. The book recounts that Mr. Zöllner, who had been carefully investigating the phenomena of Spiritualism, assured Mr. Cook of the following occurrences as facts, under his own observation.

The book cites the case of Harry Kellar, a professional performer, who says he went as a skeptic but has come away utterly unable to explain by any natural means the phenomena that he witnessed. A question and answer exchange in the book asks who makes the binding laws of spiritual life, and the answer given is that spirits are not bondaged by persons. The writer asks what would have been the condition of things, as different from the present condition as one can well imagine, with no paganism, no Roman Catholicism, no Protestantism, no multiplied sects and no Spiritualism, but Christianity, broad, united, free, and glorious.
