About this book
In an aristocratic Paris household, an older count writes his son a letter that treats duty and religion as restraints on personal freedom. This unsettling inheritance sets the terms for Octave Feuillet's novel of ambition, conscience and social influence. The opening gives philosophical ideas an immediate human weight, placing them among the lamps, paintings and carefully arranged comforts of a wealthy home.
Political life brings the younger Count de Camors a different stage for his beliefs. Elected to the Council-General and the Corps Legislatif, he serves local interests and welcomes constituents with polished courtesy. Beneath that gracious manner, however, he regards others with contempt and reserves his admiration for himself. The distance between public charm and private conviction makes this a useful read for anyone interested in character studies, French society and the ways an attractive public reputation can conceal a narrow moral outlook.
