About this book

With fifty francs, a knapsack and politically sensitive papers, Jean Dieppe climbs a rain-soaked hill in search of food and shelter. Failed plans have made recognition potentially dangerous, yet he treats his uncertainty as a source of pleasure. A castle overlooking a village draws his curiosity, especially its oddly divided lights. Its owner, the Count of Fieramondi, invites the traveller inside, giving Anthony Hope's adventure novel an opening built on hospitality, secrecy and Dieppe's cheerful confidence.

Mistaken identity and the life of a soldier of fortune shape the story. In the middle excerpt, Dieppe and a woman shelter together while two men outside bargain over payment for obtaining his papers. Threats against the door turn conversation into immediate danger. Readers can expect brisk exchanges, political intrigue and a resourceful protagonist whose self-assurance gives tense situations a comic edge.
