About this book
A snowbound barn becomes a place for stories when a robin, a sparrow, an owl and two Japanese birds gather for shelter. Their disagreement about the cause of snow leads to a tale of Tsuki, a moon maiden, and Yama, a fisherman who finds her feather mantle. Ada M. Marzials builds prose adventures around familiar nursery rhymes, giving their brief scenes room for conversation, magic and unexpected bargains.
The collection also includes Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary, Little Miss Muffet and Jack and Jill. In the latter story, the children's wish for dry weather brings Jill into the service of a witch, carrying a heavy bag filled with rain. Talking birds, a watchful cat and an unsettling cottage give these tales a mixture of playfulness and fairy tale suspense. Readers can follow how a few familiar lines become longer stories with distinct voices and troublesome wishes.
